Peaceful park

  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks
Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Good, and OK for a short no-frills camping stay. Bring good sleep mat.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: Quiet location, friendly, clean / warm toilet and shower block. Felt safe for children. Spacious. Well located next to California Country Park.

Disliked: Furthest tent area ground was quite uneven, and pitch was OK but perhaps a bit small if all others were occupied (we were the only people camping there that I was aware of). Far tent area had public footpath behind it, so not always quiet, but OK and felt safe. Old damaged tent had been left by previous occupant; was informed it would be cleared away but sadly it was still there when we left two nights later. Far tent area could have been neater overall. Accessible toilet available, but access to it could be much better; quite stressful on our visit with a wheelchair and required navigating a roadside kerb from our nearest approach from our tent; the toilet entrance also had a raised threshold (which we had been informed about in advance).

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked: Lovely site. Very quiet and peaceful. The Country Park next door was beautiful.
We had a fab pitch, far enough away from the main entrance, so very few vehicles going past us. All the pitches were generous in size, and nicely spaced, so nobody was on top of each other. We really liked how secure the site was too.

The electric supply was a bit peculiar, as we were told we needed to pay more for the 16 amp supply, but when we asked about doing so (our fridge doesn't work properly on 10 amp), we were told we were already on the 16 amp. We are still not sure that we were, as our fridge still didn't work, and is definitely not faulty. Anyway, just clearer communication about this, or a test to check what supply we were on, would have be appreciated.

I know previous reviews mentioned issues with the cleanliness of the facilities, but we didn't experience any problems. The only point I would mention on this is that other guests should take responsibility for cleaning up after themselves - it shouldn't just be down to the staff! If guests leave it in a state for others, then that is on them!

Wokingham is lovely - only a few miles away and super easy to get to on the bus (Leopard 3, the bus stops to and from town are right on the main road by the Country Park). We had a terrific meal at the Lord Raglan, and enjoyed ten pin bowling at the Super Bowl. Plus days out to Windsor and Thorpe Park.

Overall, a really fantastic few days.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (XL)

Liked: Well appointed pitch with heated and clean shower and toilet block. Excellent communications about pitch and access sorted on the day with a follow up call as we would arrive after hours. walking distance to lovely California park with great cafe and a good and varied walk by lake and marsh. secluded neat pitches surrounded by tall Scots pine trees and lowish light pollution so good stars albeit no horizon. A few unabashed ducks waddled around also.

Disliked: Onsite shop closed the day we were there (Sunday). Didn't find anything to do in evening within walking distance. A bit pricy for what we needed it for (a humble 70s t2 camper) but would (and does) suit the largest motor homes.

Local attractions

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive. On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away. For a bit of culture and history, it will take half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
