If you’re seeking space to relax, how about six million acres of it? That’s the rough size of the Adirondack Park in Franklin County, northern New York, thus earning it the title of the largest protected area in the lower 48 states.
Taking up a mere 60 acres of the park’s boreal forest is the peaceful Pine Ridge Park Campsite, edged by the Little Salmon River, where guests can fish for salmon or go wildlife watching along the miles of nature trails that run along the water's edge. Further chances to flex that fishing rod can be had at Trout River State Forest or on the Saint Lawrence River, and you can also take to the water for canoe paddling nearby too.
There’s plenty of scope for fresh-air fun at the park itself, as well – facilities include a large outdoor pool, a baseball field, a basketball court, several horseshoe pits, a playground and lawn games including giant Jenga. The recreation centre is stocked with board games and books for quieter times and less clement weather.
Barbecues and campfires are welcome at the park (source supplies 10 minutes away in Fort Covington), and evenings come alive with entertainment including live music and dancing under the stars in high season.

There’s super salmon fishing on site, but if you fancy casting about for different species, it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to get to Trout River State Forest (for, perhaps unsurprisingly, trout fishing) or half an hour to settle by the Saint Lawrence River to scout for smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch and bullheads.
If you like to get your outdoor kicks in different ways, there are heaps of hiking and mountain bike trails around the huge Adirondack Park, along with rivers and lakes to paddle canoes or kayaks on, and some mighty scenic golf courses (the closest being Malone Golf Club, 20 minutes away).
Serve up a side order of local history by taking a wander round Almanzo Wilder Farm, 20 minutes away, where there’s a museum in a restored 19th-century farmhouse along with nature trails and an orchard for kids who tire easily of anything mildly educational.
