Whether hols full of activities are demanded, or you're after a peaceful stay without much need for driving about, head to Camping De Pallegarste, a family-friendly site 800 metres from the village of Mariënburg in the province of Overijssel.
There’s plenty here to keep all members of the family busy: those happiest splashing about in the water can have their pick of the site's three pools (one for swimming laps, one for paddling and one with water play equipment) or by zooming down the big slide, while kids who are more at home in the dry can visit the animals at the petting zoo, or make the most of outdoor and indoor playgrounds.
That indoor playground is next to the site restaurant, so adults can settle on the terrace with a drink or a bite to eat while watching the kids at play. The restaurant opening hours change depending on season, so if an on-site restaurant is a requirement for stays, please check ahead. The site's shop – where bread is baked fresh daily and pizzas are made from scratch – should fill gaps between meals.
Energy-filled days here are easily sorted with activities dreamt up by the on-site team – obstacle runs, survival nights, fashion shows and lots more will fill days and nights. For time spent out in nature, follow the adventure path through the woodland or opt for an afternoon (or two, or three) by the pond fishing for white fish and carp. Not keen on angling? Choose instead to spend a day sprawled on the pond’s sandy beach.

Once everyone’s ready to get out and explore, getting about without the car is a cinch. This is the Netherlands, after all, so it shouldn’t surprise that bike rental is available on site and that plenty of bike routes criss-cross the area. If pedal power doesn’t appeal, it’s also just 10 minutes’ walk to the train station in Mariënberg for trips to Almelo, Emmen, Hardenberg, Coevorden, Zwolle and Dalfsen.
For farther-flung adventures – or for those who are simply more content to be ferrying themselves about by car – the site is well-placed for motorised jaunts to local towns and cities, starting in Almelo (20 minutes’ drive) for museums, gardens and château tours, and travelling on to Emmen (and its zoos, open-air museum and casino) and Oldenzaal (a top spot for shopping) within 40 minutes.
More high-octane moods will be handily satisfied within easy reach, as it’s about 20 minutes from base to the Slagharen and Hellendoorn theme parks, and 35 minutes to Waarbeek theme park.
