Imagine yourself splashing around a gorgeous pool as you take in spectacular views of the Aeolian Islands in the distance. Well, at Agriturismo Santa Margherita you don’t have to imagine, for that is exactly what you get – and much more besides. This farmhouse site, on a promontory halfway between San Giorgio and Marina di Patti (15 minutes’ drive to either), on Sicily’s northern coast, spoils its guests with a wide range of facilities. That pool with a view, of course; but also a Jacuzzi and a separate pool for toddlers. Kids also get a play area, a games room and assorted guided activities, including an introduction to beekeeping and olive-oil making. They can also make friends with the resident farm animals. Meanwhile adults recharge their batteries with a relaxing massage, or keep fit with a game of tennis or six-a-side football. The whole family can rent a bike (on site) and explore the local area. Accommodation is in an air-conditioned bungalow with a bathroom and an outdoor patio (with seating), which is just the ticket for a peaceful aperitif at sunset; you can purchase all you need – from wine to local produce – at the on-site shop. Then it’s time to head for dinner – either at the on-site restaurant, which serves traditional Sicilian dishes on a flower-filled terrace with coastal views, or at any of the pizzerias or seafood eateries along the coast.

Llocs d'interès

On a vertiginous headland, Tindari (half an hour’s drive) is renowned for its archaeological park, including splendid floor mosaics and the ruins of a fourth-century BC Greek theatre that hosts music performances in the summer. The Basilica Santuario Maria del Tindari houses a much-venerated statue of a Black Madonna. Just past Tindari, the Riserva Naturale Orientata Laghetti di Marinello (half an hour) comprises a series of ever-changing tidal lakes inhabited by pink flamingoes and white storks. After exploring the lakes, walk to the end of the Punta Marinello sandbank for a swim and a from-the-ground view of the imposing Tindari basilica up on the hill. Milazzo (45 minutes) is the place to go if you want to catch a ferry to the Aeolian Islands, but this town also has a gorgeous west-facing beach and a forbidding hilltop citadel. Drive all the way to the top of the narrow peninsula for the Capo Milazzo protected marine area, with clear waters for scuba diving.
