And this glorious sandy stretch isn't a short drive from in Greece's Messenia, or even a short stroll – it's right in front of it so you can have sand between your toes every morning before you've even properly woken up. (Coffee on the beach under a blazing Greek sun: what a way to start the day.)
The region of Messinia where this golden beach is set is on the edge of Foinikounta, the seaside village in an area famed for its spectacular sands. And the beach local to the site is Ligonamos, a top spot for families because of its safe waters, and also famed as a nesting spot for loggerhead sea turtles from May to August (guests are asked to respect their habitat and not make too much noise during these times, please).
It is a peaceful and family-run site, with good facilities including a snack bar, communal kitchen, play area, wifi and a mini market stocked with essentials, alongside amenities of a toilet and shower block, bath, launderette and washing-up area. Bike hire is available.
The site is 45 minutes from Kalamata, the Greek town known for its plump purple olives.

The spectacular sands of Ligonamos and clear blue Ionian Sea right by should keep you busy for some days in this part of Greece; after that, many more long lengths of beach are within easy reach including Loytsa to the east and Anemomylos to the west.
As it's Greece, piles of ancient history and old sites are all around too: wander around Methoni, Koroni, Hora and the Mycenaean tombs and catacombs to start off, along with Pylos and its thirteenth century Frankish fortress Navarino castle to start off.
Other options are the Polilimnio waterfalls, near the village of Kazarma off the road from Pylos to Messina, and the lagoon of Gialova about eight kilometres from Pylos, which along with Voidokilia Bay is a protected area for its cultural and natural heritage.
