After a reset? A lakeside oasis in rural Schleswig-Holstein could be just the thing, so how about this site near Wankendorf with direct access to the waters of the Belauer See? Campingplatz Perdöler Mühle is a family-friendly site in a rural location, surrounded by water, wildflowers, mature oaks and green meadows. It's a short walk down to the Belauer See's beach, which is very accessible and slopes down into the water very gently, making it great for children and less confident swimmers. After a refreshing dip, you could refuel at the on-site café and restaurant, where you can treat yourself to homemade cakes and an evening menu of wholesome local cuisine. If you don't feel like organising food in the morning, you can also order a breakfast basket and start the day with a spring in your step. The nearby small town of Wankendorf is five minutes' drive down the road and has handy essential amenities like a supermarket and pharmacy, plus an ice cream parlour and a kids' play area. The historic town of Plön and its lakeside castle (20 minutes) are also within easy reach, while for bigger days out you have the bustling port cities of Kiel (35 minutes), Lübeck (an hour) and Hamburg (an hour).

The area of lowland plains around Bornhöved is known for its clean, peaceful and abundant lakes. Rent an electric bike directly from your hosts at reception or bring your own two-wheeler along and get out in search of the best wild swimming spots. Similarly active times are on offer at ErlebnisWald Trappenkamp (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly forest park with walks, playgrounds, wild animals and nature talks. Plön (20 minutes) is another must-see with its 17th-century castle, terracotta-roofed old town and lakeside walkway. The lake here is much larger than back at base, so rather than swimming you might like to head out in a hired canoe or kayak, or you could climb one of the town's historic towers for far-reaching views over the water. Further afield, it's possible to get to the pretty Baltic coastal resort of Travemünde within about an hour, where there is a spacious sandy beach. Alternatively, head towards Kiel (35 minutes), a seaside city known for its regattas, learn about the Hanseatic League in Lübeck (an hour) or visit Hamburg (an hour), home to world-class museums and Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model railway in the world.
