The team at Camping Au Pré du Lac says the watery body here at Saint-Théoffrey in the Isère department soothes the soul, so take a look at the site pics to confirm they're right, take leave/truant from work, and take off to southeastern France to see it for your very own self. As the team also rightly points out, this is a cracking spot for sporty sorts,whether getting into the water or careering about on land or down slope. The site is right on the shores of the lake for watery days right at base – kayaking, windsurfing and classes to learn diving are all available from here – and its setting in the Isère's splendid mountains has it sorted for high-up hikes, climbing and spectacular scenery from several local peaks. Ski resorts are a few kilometres away, including Les Deux Alpes for skiing down the glacier in the morning then having a dip in the lake in the evening. And there's also a private beach... And a bar-restaurant with smashing views over the lake, for evening meals against the light of the sunset… and barbecues, and a playground, and wifi at reception, and a pétanque court – or you could also try viewsome fishing right from the site in the waters of the lake… All this is set 28 kilometres from the winter sports city of Grenoble, among a mountainy backdrop near the old village of Saint-Théoffrey. As well as all the above, the site has toilets and showers, a launderette, disabled facilities and a parent and baby washroom.

As you might have guessed, this is active active land, so take to the blue waters, the viewsome mountains or the spectacular countryside for weeks' worth of sporty stuff. Horse riding, cycling, windsurfing, diving and hiking the nearby mountain trails are all close by while several ski resorts are within easy driving distance. Camping Au Pré du Lac's local village of Saint-Théoffrey is on the RN 85 highway between Grenoble and the French Riviera near Cannes, part of the Route Napoleon the small one took on his way back from the island of Elba during the early days of the Hundred Days War. If you're driving it (do, it's rather scenic), look out for the gilded eagle statues to guide you on your way. Vizelle and its château are about ten kilometres from Saint-Théoffrey – go here for its gardens and a wander around the huge carp-filled canal in front of the château – and Grenoble is about 28km away, for the final stop on the Route Napoleon, more mountainous sports, and a cable car (or hike) for cracking views of the Alps from La Bastille fortress.
