What a mighty mountain view has Camping Neige et Nature (have a little gawp at pics for evidence, s’il vous plaît.)
And what a nifty location for both amenities and alfresco activities too: that peak-filled outlook drops hints that the 1.2-hectare family-run site is well placed for hilly hikes around the Haut Bréda valley (or the Belledonne massif beyond). Adventuresome sorts can also seek out all sorts of other ways to fill their fresh air days: climbing, canyoning, fishing or horse riding their way through the surrounds or surveying it all from a height on a paragliding excursion.
Feet back firmly on the ground, it’s back to the site to unwind with a swim in the heated pool or to nab something from the multilingual library of books and board games while the kids entertain themselves at the playground. Competitive sorts can join in with the tournaments of pétanque, volleyball, badminton and table tennis that get organised in summer (or hone their skills to prepare for future triumphs).
Fuel for all this can be picked up at the site’s snack bar in summer, or by joining fellow guests for one of the traditional tartiflette nights (cheesy Alpine goodness served up a couple of times a week in high season). A bakery, café and grocery store are five minutes’ amble away in La Ferriere, and there’s a tasty range of restaurants and shops in Allevard, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Got some boots made for walking? They’ll see some action around here. Some fave trails include the hour-long hike to Pissou waterfall, a potter along Pinsot’s Iron Path (also an hour away, and charting the area’s industrial past across the ages) and hitching a lift on the Saint-Hilaire du Touvet funicular for hikes at a higher elevation.
But if you really want that bird’s eye view, it’s got to be a paragliding trip: a couple of schools in Allevard can teach the basics and then take you out to fly over that fab scenery. If you’d rather stay closer to terra firma, local firms arrange active days of canyoning, rafting and horse riding, or you can pick your way along several via ferrata climbing routes within a half-hour drive.
Time to take it easy? Plan a wander around the pretty gardens of Chateau du Touvet (half an hour’s drive, and with some frankly stunning mountain views) or take any activity -induced bumps and bruises along to be soothed in the thermal waters of Allevard’s spas (15 minutes away).
