The creators of Camping Le Chêne were surely mightily smart people. And how might one come to that conclusion, you ask? Because they cleverly terraced the grounds to maximise guests’ views of the lush Céüse mountain from the excellently placed pitches, creating perhaps the highlight of this smashing site.
Butting up against the edges of the Écrins National Park and around 20 minutes’ drive south of Gap, this is a peaceful as well as postcardworthy place on the outskirts of Tallard town. It’s handily placed for amenities, too: shops, restaurants and activity providers are about a 10-minute walk away, and a tennis court, multisports court and public outdoor pool (which is both heated and free to use) are within a couple of minutes’ walk.
Getting out into the open air in this part of the Hautes-Alpes is a very fine idea indeed and the site team have numerous suggestions for you including climbing, canyoning, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and watersports.
For high-flying sorts there’s also the chance to see it all from above on a hot air balloon trip or small plane flight from the aerodrome around 10 minutes’ walk away.
After such adrenaline-sparking pursuits, the smart new bathroom blocks set up on site are prime places for freshening up, and other facilities at dog-friendly Camping Le Chêne include wifi and a launderette.

One spot to sashay towards on foot from this park is Château de Tallard, a 14th-century castle that often hosts shows and events (15 minutes’ walk). You might want to jump in the car to access other activities relatively nearby, though, such as horse riding (five minutes’ drive) and the rather refreshing rafting trips in Gap (20 minutes).
Up for offbeat attractions with a rural flavour? Amble towards the Céüse goat farm (20 minutes) so younger members of your travel troupe can pet four-legged critters while older ones chomp on cheeses produced on site. La Ferme du Col farm, 20 minutes, is also aimed at the kiddos – watch as the sprogs fawn over exotic creatures such as ostriches and llamas.
Hikes and swims, meanwhile, are to be had in the Les Gorges de la Méouge, half an hour away, a place carved from limestone with intriguing rock formations, teeny sandy beaches and refreshing waterholes to spot on an amble.
For aquatic activities that are a tad more dramatic, head to Serre-Ponçon Lake (half an hour) and whoosh down the slides set up for you to plunge straight from the banks into its waters.
