Laid out on a terraced hillside, Koko Holidays at Les Collines de Castellane is a place that's got truly spectacular views over the mountains of Haute Provence. The site is totally geared up for fab family adventures – all with a backdrop of those awesome views. Spacious rental tents here are well equipped and sheltered by pine trees, and close to amenities including a launderette and a toilet block with showers. Each tent has a little kitchenette, but with a pizza takeaway service, snack bar and laidback brasserie also on site, you're under no pressure to cook if you don't fancy it. Daily life centres on the pool complex, with waterfalls and bridges to wade under and a three-lane slide for the kids to whizz down. They can also run around safely in the spacious playground or scale the climbing wall – and in summer, there’s a supervised adventure park with rope trails and ziplines (you can use the park for a fee in low season). Challenge older kids to football and table tennis games, or try your hand at pétanque. Also on the site are basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, as well as an open-air gym so you can keep on top of that fitness regime (if you must). And if you simply want to explore Provence? Helpful staff are on hand to help organise all your outdoor activities, from playing a round of golf to pony trekking on forest trails. If you’re after more of an adrenaline fix, opt for bungee jumping or paragliding over the Verdon Gorge, and rafting along on the river.

Challenging hiking routes are all around you in the Verdon Natural Regional Park countryside; Sentier Blanc Martel is one of the most best-known and leads through the Verdon Gorge (55 minutes’ drive to the starting point), or you could drive up to the Point Sublime viewpoint (30 minutes) for Insta-worthy photos as well as shorter hiking trails. There’s high adventure to be had in the gorge itself, with a range of extreme sports from canyoning to bungee jumping and via ferrata climbing courses. Keen cyclists might consider the long haul up to Europe’s highest mountain lake, Lac d’Allos (four hours by bike), while the whole family can enjoy gentle loop trails around Castellane (40 minutes by bike). Slow the pace for relaxing days exploring by car. Head for pretty Provençal towns like Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Colmars and Entrevaux (all an hour) to rootle around in farmers’ markets for lavender and soap, or head to Fayence (55 minutes) for brightly coloured ceramics.
