Picture this Picardy scene… waking up on a peaceful farm in a nature reserve, for hours of activities right on site or in the surrounding countryside, followed by a spa session and a swim? Picture yourself pulling in – and staying put – at La Ferme des Aulnes.
This popular (but spacious, so never packed) place is the brainchild of Marie and Denis, who cheerfully work their socks off to assist all ages in having mighty happy hols. Sorting the kids out first (as happy enfants = happy grownups), there's a play area, table football, beach volleyball and a basketball court outdoors, and a games room with ping pong, table football, snooker and video games inside. A kids' club runs from Monday to Fridays too.
And for the grownups? Start your day with a gym session if you're really keen, or have a swim in the covered heated pool (probably a more sensible early-morning option). Then amble over to the health spa for pampering picks including a sauna, all available for a reasonable extra charge.
Reception is open every day and has a grocery shop with fresh bread, a library and tourist information.

This fab farm is in a tiptop location for northern France attractions and activities like beaches, watersports, hikes, history, fishing and wildlife watching.
Twitchers should trek along to the lush Parc du Marquenterre nature and birdwatching haven in the Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve to see thousands of birds around the park's 200 hectares. Take one of three marked nature trails depending on how active you feel and how long (or short) are the legs of the littlies: the green trail at 45 minutes, the blue at an hour and a half, and the red at two hours. Guided tours run twice a day as well.
Within a few minutes' drive is Nampont-Saint-Martin's famed golf club, with two 18-hole courses in a greenly scenic park surrounding a 15th-century château.
