One of the longest beaches in Europe is a paltry couple of kilometres from the Loire-Atlantique's Camping Les Ajoncs d'Or: the nine golden kilometres of swish seaside resort La Baule-Escoublac on the Côte d'Amour.
Home to a casino, high-class hotels, swanky seafood restaurants, golf courses and a horse-racing track, Le Baule's been a popular pick with clever Parisians and Bretons as a seaside destination for over a century. Its setting in former southern Brittany neighbouring the Loire Valley means there are rich pickings too for castles such as that at Nantes, ancient towns like Guérande, and more coastal spots such as traditional Quiberon and the fishing village of Pornichet, five kilometres away.
Fishing, tennis, indoor swimming, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and surfing are close by. For leisure on site, there's a big outdoor heated pool, a paddling pool, a pétanque court, a kids' club, and daytime and evening entertainment.
If you're not sampling seafood (again) in La Baule, the site restaurant, bar, takeaway and food shop will see you covered for eats.

The fine sands of the nine-kilometre La Baule beach are less than two kilometres from the site, the same distance as the restaurants, shops, bars and casino of La Baule-Escoublac's town centre.
Those into history have heaps to pick from, like the Breton fishing village of Pornichet five kilometres away; the walled city of Guérande, seven kilometres from the site, and the spectacular old sites of Nantes, about an hour and a quarter to the east.
La Baule is edged by the landscapes and wetlands of the Brière Regional Natural Park, a top Pays de la Loire place for birdwatching. You could also explore the park's Grande Brière Mottière marsh and its canals, reed beds, wetland meadows, peat bogs and islands by boat, or take in the vista from the bell tower of Saint-Lyphard church.
