What could possibly be better than sleeping in a tipi in the peaceful Loire-Atlantique countryside? Possibly sleeping in a tipi on an organic Loire-Atlantique farm where you can commune with a herd of angora goats? That’s what you’re signing up for at Tipis Mohair de l’Erdre, half an hour’s drive from buzzy Nantes and its airport. It's just a five-minute drive (or a 25-minute walk) from the local town Casson. For train or tram connections, the site is also a 10-minute drive from Sucé-sur-Erdre (or there's an alternative train station in Nantes). Sleeping between two and six guests, the tipis straddle a grass field sheltered by mature trees on the 40-acre farm. Each is kitted out with simple mattresses (bring your own bedding) and heated by firepit (you’ll be instructed how to lit your fire by the site owners on arrival). Hot showers are powered by solar energy, but otherwise this is very much wild camping and you’ll be left to your own devices. Explore the farm’s woodland paths during the day (look out for buzzards and hawks in the treetops and deer flitting through the undergrowth) or help the goatherd to look after the animals. When evening falls, stay quiet on your pitch and you might, just might, get to see hares, foxes, pine martens and owls as they go about their nocturnal business.

Em va agradar: Nous avons passé un bon moment avec Gwenaëlle, Didier et les chèvres angora. C'est très enrichissant comme expériences! Il y a le côté fun de camping autour du feu au Tipi, aussi leur vécus & mode de vie très inspirant :)

Em va agradar: I had a great time.
It's a wonderful experience. Very different even to normal camping. Very comfortable bed & clean toilets/ shower.

The angora goats are lovely. So cute. The owners were extremely helpful & friendly. I loved the bbq. When you go, make sure you look at the tent from outside when the fire is lit at night.

Get out exploring the local countryside on the Chemins Creux walking route, which passes through the farm, or stay overnight in a tipi before returning to your hike on the long-distance St-Jacques de Compostela pilgrimage route. If you would rather avoid using the car to explore the region, join La Vélodyssée cycle route (10 minutes by bike), or ride along the tree-lined towpath of the Nantes-Brest Canal (45 minutes). Casson (five minutes’ drive) is a town known for its green credentials and artisan foods; visit to pick up local delicacies including foie gras, snails and honey from local producers. Slightly further away, admire the half-timbered medieval cottages in leafy Angers (55 minutes), where you can also take a free guided tour of the spectacular, twin-spired Cathedral Saint-Maurice and fly high over the magical plantings in Terra Botanica gardens by hot-air balloon. Lively Nantes (half an hour) beckons with entertaining rides aboard its famed three-storey mechanical elephant (book well ahead of time), tours of the imposing Castle of the Dukes of Brittany and posh shopping in the Neo-Renaissance-style Passage Pommeraye arcade.
