Folk who’ve ever failed to convince their offspring of the joys of a rural ramble, Les Chalets de Pierretoun may have just the secret weapon you’re looking for. Among the full-time residents here are a small herd of donkeys who are available to accompany you on the fab trails that surround the place. (And if you don’t have small sorts to transport, the beasts are more than happy to carry a picnic and assorted kit for you instead.)
If hiking’s not really your thing, there’s plenty more to keep you occupied in the area around the little Basque village of La Bastide-Clairence – the beaches and coastal towns of Biarritz, Anglet and Bayonne are about a 40-minute drive away, or you may prefer to scoot further inland for rafting, fishing or paragliding in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
Hanging around on site for a bit is a pretty attractive option, too – you could take a dip in the pool, hone your pétanque skills or just stroll around the five hectares of oak grove, greeting the resident llamas as you pass.
A games room (with video games and table football) provides shelter on less clement days, and there’s a snack bar that opens in high season to cater for those who haven’t yet had a chance to hit the excellent farmers’ market in the village; bread, pastries and garden veg can also be picked up on site for self-catering sorts.

If you’d like to see a little more of the countryside, family-friendly canoe trips can be had from the village; more pulse-raising adventures including rafting, canyoning, climbing and quad biking are in Itxassou, 40 minutes’ drive away.
Over by the seaside, 40 minutes’ drive away, it’s worth hitting Bayonne to visit the Basque Museum, stroll around the botanic gardens and scoff some of the town’s famed ham. There are fab beaches in nearby Anglet and Biarritz, with plenty of watersports options and an aquarium in Biarritz as well.
