Ah, the Périgord Noir: so-named for its thick forest coverage and rich, fertile soil that supports lots of lovely greenery. If that sounds like a prime spot in which to put down your own roots for a little while, check out a stay at Oh! Campings au Camping La Garenne. This sizeable site is set over almost four hectares of Dordogne countryside, surrounded by oaks and pines and a 10-minute walk from Peyrignac. Guests may well appreciate this shady location when summer's at its peak, but those looking to soak up some rays have plenty of scope to do so at the poolside or on the bar terrace. Kicking back in relaxing surrounds is certainly moreish, and you can up the chillout factor at the spa area (with a jacuzzi, hammam and sauna). If you fancy an outdoor breakfast, baguettes, pains au chocolat and croissants are sold on site, while a snack bar's open for light bites during the day. In the evening, head to the restaurant for a slap-up meal, or avail yourself of the handy takeaway service. If you feel like picnicking among the trees, there's a nifty grocery shop for essentials (including, naturellement, bottles of local wine). Dogs are welcome on site and kids are well catered for too, with play areas and, in high season, a trampoline and bouncy castle. Other summertime activities include archery, karaoke, a kids' club and regular performances. If you want to get out and about, bikes can be hired on site.

Llocs d'interès

Peyrignac (10 minutes' walk) is home to Château de la Chapoulie, a stronghold from the 15th century. Stroll down into the village to survey the imposing turrets, or drive further afield for manors and mansions such as the châteaux at Hautefort (20 minutes' drive), Puymartin (40 minutes) or Beynac (50 minutes). Hautefort (20 minutes' drive) is worth a visit in its own right: the village is full of pic-worthy side streets, a museum of medicine and, on the same site as the hilltop château, impressive formal gardens. Other nearby beauty spots include the riverside town of Terrasson (20 minutes), home to Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire, whose artfully arranged flora and fountains are sure to soothe the soul. For a larger town, make tracks for Périgueux (40 minutes) for flea markets and swish restaurants or wanders around a handsome cathedral, military museum and Vesunna, a Roman archeological site. Guests can step even further back in time by paying a visit to Lascaux caves (20 minutes) to see the prehistoric cave paintings.
