What a fine Dumfries and Galloway spot this is – with sea views over the Solway coast on one side and looking up to the Galloway Hills on the other, it’s fair to say that Barmagachan is well set for seeing some of the scenery of southwest Scotland. The grass pitches here are scenic indeed, and simple in style – there’s very little provided by way of facilities, but you’re welcome to start campfires and bring along a dog for some company. Kirkcudbright is about a 10-minute drive away for any provisions (or pub dinners) you may need, and it’s a similar drive to the popular Cream o’ Galloway ice cream parlour for sweet treats. Working up an appetite for ice cream feasts should be pretty straightforward around here, as this is a cracking area for those in search of outdoor pursuits. The 7Stanes mountain biking areas at Kirroughtree and Dalbeattie are both about half an hour’s drive away, as are the hiking trails (and stargazing areas) of Galloway Forest Park. Golf courses (including a smashing seafront course at Brighouse Bay), gardens and castles are also close by for visiting, and of course there are lots of lovely beaches and craggy spots to seek out along the coastline.
