You'll find right royal views from placid Compton Park in east Cornwall, set on the sunny south-western slopes of Kit Hill. The hill was once owned by Prince Charles (he gave it to the Cornish people to celebrate the birth of Wills in 1985) and from here scenery seekers can see kingly panoramas of Cornwall and Devon – such as Plymouth and the Mew Stone to the east; the Eddystone lighthouse 12 miles out to sea; the north Cornish coast to above Looe; the white peaks of old Cornish clay tips, the Eden Project and the eastern side of Bodmin Moor to the west. This part of Cornwall is rolling in history and heritage: Kit Hill and its slopes form Kit Hill Country Park, heavy in Cornish mining heritage, and Compton Park itself is on the site of a former tin mine. More into natural history? Kit Hill is the highest point in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and named after 'kite', the old English word for birds of prey – look up from the mines to see buzzards and kestrels hunting overhead. On site, stroll around the peaceful six acres before settling down to a home-cooked meal in the restaurant and tearoom of the converted steam engine house – the conversion also includes the site amenities of showers, loos and washing facilities. Pubs, food shops, hardware stores and a supermarket are at Callington, 20 minutes' walk away. Kelly Bray, the closest village to the park at five minutes' walk, has a pub and a launderette.

Em va agradar: Once the fog cleared the views were lovely
I didn’t eat in the restaurant but it all looked clean and tidy and smelt nice
Staff and fellow campers were friendly
Toilet facilities clean and tidy

No em va agradar: It had complete bathrooms although rather petite shower with uncontrollable overhead water jet
Not many of them but wasn’t too busy

Em va agradar: Amazing views. Very quiet and peaceful as no children allowed. Good size pitch and level. Very tidy. Friendly staff in cafe, where you go to check in. Gorgeous cream teas with fluffy scones. Bathroom facilities the cleanest and nicest looking I've stayed in. Heated towel rail was lovely. Will definitely recommend and stay again.

No em va agradar: It pains me to criticize but I was unable to use the shower more than the once I tried. Shower cubicle was too small, to turn on the water you need the shower door open but the fixed shower head made the water go all over the floor. No tray inside for bottles. It got my hair all wet as it sprayed directly onto my head. It was such a shame as it looked so well kept and clean. When I come again I will bring spare old towels to put on the floor (the mop provided couldn't cope!) and will use a shower cap. And maybe I will have to lose a few stone to squeeze through the gap.

Em va agradar: A very good campsite. Clean and tidy with level, hardstanding pitches. We only had a little bit of contact with the staff but they were very friendly and helpful.
There is a lovely restaurant on site but we didn't have time to use it during our stay. Maybe next time! We will be happy to stay there again.

Em va agradar: Able to park our 12m/39ft RV, although the entrance from the road is difficult (only possible from one direction, not both). Road up to the pitches is narrow for an RV, but pitch size/space is excellent.

The restaurant on site is busy and excellent.

No em va agradar: Being unable to dump black waste as there is no facility accessible for a vehicle our size. The dump area is around the rear of a building and getting the RV to that building is not possible. Other sites have offered to remove/lift drain covers to allow dumping, but they 'can't open drain covers' on this site, plus the visible drains are in grass areas where RV would not want to go.

Em va agradar: Ease of access, nice pitch, very pleasant welcome, nice bathrooms/washing facilities.

No em va agradar: it's not a dislike, but I may have missed finding a path to get to the peak of Kit Hill from the site? This would be a huge asset to the site if there was one.

Em va agradar: There is a dedicated parking space to stop, so look for the sign as you drive in which will be on your left so don't drive down to the restaurant parking area.
Check-in was done at the restaurant which was very easy and the staff were friendly and helpful. They give you a map with the space allocated to you and all information is on the card with the map and you spot.
The site is small and very tidy. The toilets and showers are spotless, and they are among the best we have been to.
If you want to eat at the restaurant, arrive early or make a reservation, as it becomes very busy.
The views are spectacular on a clear day; we only had one cloudy day.
Overall a lovely site and a credit to the staff who run it.

See the sights of Cornwall, west Devon, Plymouth and Dartmoor with royal ease from Compton Park via the easily accessible A38 and A30 roads or by taking a train from Gunnislake two miles away along the Tamar Valley line to the Bere Peninsula and Plymouth. On foot, stride among the scenery, wildlife and mines of Kit Hill Country Park: climb to the stack at the top of the hill for spectacular views over Bodmin Moor. Go east for 386 square miles of walking, climbing or cantering at Dartmoor, and south-east to Plymouth for fathoms' worth of maritime heritage including the National Marine Aquarium and famed Plymouth Hoe. To the north and south, days (weeks?) of splashing can be had at Cornwall's safe and clean family beaches and at the watersports activities of Roadford and Siblyback lakes. Make for award-winning Morwellham Quay on the Tamar for more mining history, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the industrial heritage of Cornwall and Devon. If historic houses are more your heritage thing, both counties come with heaps of heritage buildings and gardens including lovely Lanhydrock at Bodmin and 700 year old Buckland Abbey at Yelverton. For smalls, the Tamar Valley Donkey Park and play barn or a puff on the steam railways at Launceston and Bodmin should see them sorted, while family days out at the lush Eden Project are about 45 minutes' drive away.
