Sitting between Romsey and Winchester in rural Hampshire, Meadowbrook Farm is a handy, no-fuss stopover for adult guests on their way down to/back from Southampton (20 minutes’ drive) for ferry trips to the Isle of Wight, or Portsmouth (35 minutes) for forays across Europe. It’s also convenient for the M3 and M27 if you’re heading north or west across the UK. The hardstanding pitches at this quiet, dog-friendly site – gated for your extra security – overlook lush meadows and woodland, and you’re pretty much guaranteed a decent night’s kip as you won’t be disturbed by anything much louder than owls hooting. And in the morning you might well wake up to the sight of peacocks roaming free across the fields. If you want to fend for yourselves when it comes to catering, stock up in Romsey supermarkets (10 minutes), but if cooking’s not on your agenda, there are a couple of foodie pubs within the same distance. Simple facilities on site include grey waste disposal, with electric hook-ups available at an additional cost.

Em va agradar: Very peaceful, the owner met us as we came in and was very friendly. As it happened we were the only ones staying that night. We booked a hard standing but it turns out elec was available for an extra £5.
Parking was in any orientation you preferred to enjoy the view across the meadow, which is often visited by deer. Although we didn't see the herd that comes through regularly we did see a lone deer first thing whilst having breakfast. We were also visited by the resident peacock which seemed very tame. We would stay again it's a great overnight venue but bear in mind it is a basic set up and you need to be self contained. There is also a chemical toilet emptying point which Is essentially an old toilet and a cleaning hose.

No em va agradar: The sat nav led is into the farm/riding school next door! And the entrance to Meadowbrook wasn't obvious, in fact we ended up going in through the adjoining Three Gates site.

We wanted to get away over Christmas in our Motor Home and this place was perfect. No issues in finding the site either. Jason was there to greet us on arrival, really friendly chap.

Em va agradar: Nice and chilled, quiet and dark. Felt a little spooky in the winter with only a couple of other vans there but was perectly adequate. It's a bit strange driving through another site to get there, but the information I was sent was great and clearly explained this so no issues finding it. Location is great just on the outskirts of Southampton.

No em va agradar: Not a dislike as it was clearly stated when booking, so not an issue, but would be even better if they had toilets and wifi. I think there is wifi somewhere on the site but depends where you park and I was too lazy to move for it.

Em va agradar: Seeing the deer in the field, truly amazing. They were fairly comfortable with us watching them. The autumn colours of the field made for a very relaxing space. The peacock waiting by Jason's, the owner, door and the pheasant.

Llocs d'interès

If you need to stretch your legs (and those of any accompanying dogs of course), the verdant water gardens and woodland trails at Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum (five minutes’ drive) couldn’t be more convenient. If you have a bit more time on your hands, climb up to the triangular monument in Farley Mount Country Park (10 minutes) for spectacular views across woodland right to the Solent. There are more hikes to be had in the New Forest National Park, where you can keep an eye out for native ponies running wild and encounter endangered otters at New Forest Wildlife Park. Wind up a day in the park with afternoon tea at New Forest Lavender Gardens (all 20 minutes) before plundering their gift shop for lavender-themed souvenirs. A whistle-stop tour of ancient Winchester (20 minutes) can include a guided tour of the splendid Gothic-era cathedral (spot Jane Austen’s tomb in the nave) and the vaulted Great Hall constructed at the order of William the Conqueror. Travel back to present day to learn about the cosmos at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (also 20 minutes).
