Pitching up by a pub – that’s always a fine idea. Settle in for a tasty dinner, and as many drinks as you wish, then simply stroll across the garden to get to your bed without any worries over who’s going to drive. And it’s an even finer idea if the pub in question is a cosy, friendly place like the Providence Inn in the village of Yedingham, around a 15-minute drive from Malton. There’s a cheery Yorkshire welcome for all guests here, be they families, groups, couples or single travellers – the folk on site just request that all visitors respect each other (and the neighbours) by keeping the hubbub down after midnight. (Please do note that there is likely to be a bit of noise from the pub/beer garden in the evenings though – such is the way with pubs…) Life here is pretty relaxed and informal – guests can pick their pitches, and are welcome to light up barbecues or build fires in firepits (as long as they're kept off the grass). Along with basic bathroom facilities (cleaned twice daily), there’s access to the River Derwent for those who’ve brought along a fishing licence and asked permission. Pike are the most likely catch, but there have been sightings of other slippery species around here too. And so to dinner… home-cooked food is served seven days a week in the pub (you're advised to book in advance for meals, and take note that on Sundays, the kitchen closes at 5pm), and it gets a thumbs up from the locals, who have been known to drive a considerable number of miles to get their dinner here. There’s a good-sized beer garden for alfresco drinks on fine days, and a generous play area to keep kids entertained while the grownups nurse their drinks nearby.

Em va agradar: The pub food was amazing and great value. The staff were super friendly. The play area is nicely enclosed so the kids are safe playing. Facilities usable

No em va agradar: The camping ground is uneven in places. We ended up on what felt like a huge crater! The location is also quite far away from any shops, so make sure you bring everything you need unless you don’t mind hoping in the car for supplies!

Em va agradar: Amazing lady who greeted us in the bar on arrival on Saturday. Fabulous and so kind, she even managed to squeeze us into a pitch with electric which made us all happy. Lovely staff, the bar was cosy and friendly and the area was pleasant, quiet and lovely, exactly what we needed.

No em va agradar: First day there wasn’t a scrap of toilet roll in the toilets for those who were camping & using the outdoor toilets. Cld be done with some paper towels too, for people to dry their hands on. We managed though, think it was just a small oversight. Arrived back from a long day at Castle Howard on the Sunday and were looking forward to a nice meal in the site pub, only to be told there’s no food on. The signs outside are misleading as it says food served daily. With it being a secluded are and with no meals on (which I didn’t realise until after I had a few glasses of wine) I was stuck there and had no choice but to spend a fortune on food delivery which was really disappointing. We wanted to end our little weekend with a nice sit down meal. Lovely girl done her best to explain and she was kind. Another member of staff kept saying there’s signs everywhere. There is absolutely none out the front. Think on bank holidays they are losing money there not catering for families who may need hospitality. Only thing really that ruined our stay.

Em va agradar: Pub staff friendly and food was ok.

No em va agradar: Not what it looks like at all. Tired, run down and dirty toilets/showers with no toilet roll. Play park is run down and site feels more suited to “pub stopover” when expectations are lower. Not worth the price you pay. Paid extra £10 to move pitch to get away from noisy aggressive dogs. No one checking site or keeping things in order

Em va agradar: Fantastic family friendly site! Great price, Great size pitch! This was our 3rd visit to this site and every time we come, the kids don’t want to leave! All the kids play on the park and tree swing together and the site is a perfect size that we can relax while they play, as can always see or hear them! The food at the pub is beautiful and again, great price! The staff are all lovely too!

Em va agradar: Everything about the Providence is lovely. The staff are friendly, the customers are friendly, the site is well maintained and clean. We had somewhere to walk our dogs. The food looked amazing, we missed the serving time because we had a nap.

Staff in the pub lovely and helpful

No em va agradar: The toilet facilities really old and dated, and needed a clean also could do with more, also people washing the toilet tanks where we are meant to be washing our pots!

Em va agradar: The food and drinks in the pub were good. Friendly hospitality and good atmosphere in the pub.

No em va agradar: The non ehu field was fairly uneven and this made it tricky to pitch our van.
The toilet and shower facilities were basic and limited, not well maintained at all. There was nowhere to empty a toilet either.
This campsite would be better suited to be offered as free if using the pub, as £25 seemed very expensive given the standard of facilities

To work up an appetite for dinner, drive north for about 15 minutes to the North York Moors National Park, head west for the Howardian Hills (25 minutes) or make a break for the beaches and coast path around Filey and Scarborough (both about half an hour away) or Whitby (45 minutes). A bit of history as you roam? Stop in at Castle Howard (25 minutes) to stroll through the elegant gardens, visit the stunning stately home and seek out the secret island. Swish Scampston Hall (10 minutes) is also worth a stop, and there’s more recent history on display among the 20th-century exhibits at Eden Camp history museum (15 minutes). For more rural pursuits, join the pretty pink birds at Flamingo Land (20 minutes) or puff through the countryside on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering (15 minutes). When you fancy a change of scenery, head to York (45 minutes) for a day of visits to the minster, the city walls, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the railway museum, the chocolate museum…
