Have fishing rod, will travel. If your dream holiday involves sitting on the banks of a peaceful lake while casting a line, Gatton Waters Caravan Park might well be the place for you. Sitting a five-minute drive from the Norfolk village of Hillington, this adults-only site spreading over 24 acres has its own coarse-fishing lake, stocked with carp, roach, rudd, perch, bream and tench. It also has a fully-stocked bar open on weekends. While you indulge your favourite activity, the rest of your family (and the dog, who is a welcome guest here) might prefer to explore the surrounding woodlands, which is inhabited by hares and other wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, the lake itself attracts plenty of winged creatures; however, if you’re into birdwatching, you should take the half-hour drive to Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve, an area of salt marshes and sand dunes populated by terns, plovers and wintering geese. Some might prefer a day at the seaside, maybe at sandy Brancaster Beach (25 minutes) or Holkham Beach (40 minutes), or at Blakeney Point (45 minutes), which is known for its seal colony. Want to catch a spectacular Norfolk sunset? Head to Snettisham Beach (20 minutes), then get back to the site for an evening barbecue (stopping for provisions in Hillington, which has a fully stocked convenience store and a petrol station). Not in the mood for cooking? There are plenty of pubs serving locally sourced food and ales in the nearby villages. Amenities at the caravan park include ladies’ and gents’ heated shower and toilet blocks, and a washing-up area, as well as electric hook-up, chemical disposal, wifi and charging and recycling facilities.

Em va agradar: Very friendly host. Lovely peaceful site with nearly all pitches facing the beautiful 8 acre lake.

No em va agradar: I know there’s nothing that can be done about it but I spent an hour cleaning up goose poo from our shoes when I got home and my car is covered in pigeon poo which got baked on! Not parking under the trees again 🤣

If you like fishing the lake is excellent.

Em va agradar: Absolutely beautiful site. The owner is incredibly hardworking and made our stay perfect. We spent an enjoyable evening in the bar, hosted by Mark, who has created a warm and friendly atmosphere. All the facilities were excellent and clean. The site was beautifully maintained. We will definitely be returning.

Em va agradar: What a lovely site this is,when you arrive your welcomed with a smile from the lovely ladys in reception and shown to your pitch by mark on his bike(very helpful man),the site is very well kept,toilets and showers spotless,a lovely setting around the lake with an abundence of animal life,we will definately be returning in august

Em va agradar: Everything! The site is beautiful, loved the sunsets around the lake. Pitches are a good size, site was kept well, facilities were Clean and modern. There more than enough blocks to service the whole site. Staff all lovely and gave detailed instructions on the set up. We will definitely return - could be one of our favourites for a quick getaway.

Humans can also stroll or cycle along nature trails winding through oak and chestnut groves, then reward themselves with an elegant afternoon tea (book in advance). At Norfolk Lavender (15 minutes), you can feast your eyes (and nose) on fields upon fields of colourful and fragrant flowers. Informative tours explain the process of harvesting and distilling lavender oil, and you will also learn all about the various uses of this aromatic plant. Stretching along the River Great Ouse, the historic town of King’s Lynn (15 minutes) is justifiably proud of its maritime heritage, which you can explore on guided or self-guided tours that take you along narrow cobbled streets to the medieval harbour and quayside.
