  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails
Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall Camping Club, a family-owned site among the Snowdonia mountains, is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries). These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas. Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod Hall will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is splendid for hikers and cyclists, with several local trails to choose from. Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Guests will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers, and are welcome to construct campfires to keep warm of an evening (but please note you'll need to use the firepits provided, and buy your wood on site). This is a wild camping site and it's possible you may have to walk up to the top field – it's a little walk but you'll be rewarded with some fab views… Please note that there's no mobile signal or wifi here: guests are welcome to use the landline. Kids are only allowed on site if over the age of 14 (and will be classed as adults for charging purposes).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The perfect wild camping experience. It's wild camping with a tap and a toilet. If you are new too wild camping this is an excellent place to start. Be aware that you need to hike a short distance from the parking area to the camping area. I like this fact as it encourages you to take a lightweight backpacking set up, rather than the whole kitchen sink! The staff are very friendly and helpful. My dog had a great time too! I would be happy to recommend this site to anyone!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Liked: The site is amazing if wanting wild camping, the views were out of this world. The 2 men who shown us where to go and everything were very polite, couldn't hear any of the other campers and they were all close by.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This place is a gem, I 100% recommend anyone to visit this campsite, pitches are nicely spaced and give you a sense of privacy which was amazing for our doggo as he can sometimes be reactive, we had an incredible spot with an amazing view in the wooded area, the guys who run it are SO lovely, and helped us with getting everything to the pitch, we arrived earlier than we said we would and it was no trouble, toilets were clean, shower was clean, and it gives an amazing wild camping experience with the added bonus of toilet and shower facilities, first day it was sunny then the good old British weather arrived and poured down on day 2 and 3 but the scenery was still stunning. In a good location to go exploring and near to some beautiful walks, not too far from Denbigh either which made getting supplies simple. We will be back for sure next year it’s an incredible spot, heads up when they say no signal they mean no signal and it is glorious!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved everything about the campsite, as it is a wild camping area we get to select spacious pitches that are not close to each other which provides a lot of privacy. All our bags, items and camping gear were taken up to our pitch on a quad bike which makes things very easy. The setting itself in terms of where we pitched is lovely as it gave us scenic views of a reservoir and mountain range (which I assume is Snowdon). The shower and toilet facilities are separately located adjacent to the main building. Also a spring water line is available near the main building. The staff were very friendly and try their best to accommodate our requests. Thank you Grant for all the help given to us with our luggage. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to escape their hectic lifestyles and relax in nature.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet surroundings

Disliked: The pitchup site said it had showers. There were no showers. The man who showed us round casually and unapologetically said ‘oh, if you’re here all week then there might be showers before the end of the week.’ He offered no alternative solution and didn’t show us inside the toilets, where there was hand sanitiser but no sink. There is nowhere to wash up, clean your teeth, wash your hands or the rest of you. This would have been fine if it was what we were expecting so we could have come prepared, or just booked something else. The site is also on a steep hillside which was extremely muddy and there was hardly any level ground for pitching. Dogs and children seem to be allowed, contrary to the information online. The two dogs that live at the house barked incessantly. We lasted two nights and moved elsewhere.

From the manager: Oh dear I think you just chose the wrong place to visit we consistently have 10/10 reviews. Also I know for a fact you were offered the use of the shower in the house but as I said Wild Camping just was the wrong choice for you., Also the shower is available and perhaps you should have spoken with us and we would have done our best to make you happy.

Hosts were excellent, extremely helpful and informative. Campsite was brilliant, you…

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Hosts were excellent, extremely helpful and informative. Campsite was brilliant, you could choose your pitch and there was a lot of variety, from completely open on the hilltop to sheltered under a load of trees. The views of Snowdonia you get from some parts are breath-taking. There is a lot to do in the area, amazing nature reserves and walking trails with a lot of wildlife. We took our own shower but the one there was working towards the end of the stay anyway. The car park being away from the campsite was nice as there were very few disturbances and it really felt like you were alone in the middle of nowhere. Highly recommended, we will definitely be back!

Disliked: The only thing I can think of to criticise are the potholes in the road to the car park, but they're easy enough to get over if you drive slowly

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly staff - helped us take our gear up the hill on the quad which would have been hard without Good spot - real wild camping experience with no cars around, on clear nights the stars looked amazing Toilets really clean inside. Really good camping spot and different pitch types gives an authentic experience. If you want to pitch up next to your car for convenience this place isn't for you, but for an authentic wild camping experience give it a go!

Disliked: Only bad thing I can say is - Showers not built even though pitch up says they are - seems to be common amongst reviews - we though we'd got lucky when we saw the managers response to a recent one saying "showers will be open tomorrow night!" - but this is not true unfortunately.

From the manager: I am sorry about the shower but due to torrential rain all last week they couldn't finish the electrics but as I sit here the electrician is connecting the shower and it WILL be open this evening!!!

Liked: Really good and considerate hosts with pitches varying from easy to wild camping. Running spring tap and toilets on site and car park in another field. Pitches have a fire pit which is definitely needed for the flies! Lovely reservoir walk straight from the farm with gorgeous views. Very happy with the overall experience and would happily stay here again!

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use Hafod Hall as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve. The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish-style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining. You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
